Learning Reflection in A Discourse Approach in Reading

What did you learn in this class?In this course, I learned many things about  Discourse approach in reading. I learned 10 unit. I learned about different genres of text.
1. Recount- Recount is a text which retells events or experiences in the past. Its purpose is either to inform or to entertain the audience. There is no complication among the participants and that differentiates from narrative.

2Narrative- Narrative is a text focusing specific participants. Its social function is to tell stories or past events and entertain the readers.

3. 
Description - Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

4. Procedure
- Procedure is a text which tell the reader how to make something.

5. 
Comparison and Contrast- This handout will help me first to determine whether a particular assignment is asking for comparison/contrast and then to generate a list of similarities and differences, decide which similarities and differences to focus on and organize your paper so that it will be clear and effective.

6. 
Cause and Effect - Cause and Effect is a text to  shows relationship between cause  and effect.

7. 
Definition - Definition is a statement of the meaning of a term.
8. 
Classification- Classification is a text to divide general concepts in to a number of different types.

9. 
Exemplification Exemplification is a text to adding information to explain or illustrate a general idea.

10. 
Problem solving- Problem solving is a text tell about problem and then gives one or more solutions.
Teacher taught us to find 
discourse markers, we can read the paragraph and did it. It can help me understand the meaning of the text. 
What did you find easy?- In my opinion, Recount and Procedure were easy for me because I like diary writing and like cooking. 
What did you find difficult?
- I think most of lesson was difficult because I didn't know meaning of the words and it made me not understand about meaning. When I did exercise it made me confuse and not   confident it.

How did you solve the problem?
I solve my problem by do exercises myself. Sometimes I asked my friends and found the some vocabulary before class.

What are your attitudes towards the lesson?
- Sometimes, I felt bad that I can't did exercise and not understand it, but I tried to practise and asked my friends about each problem. I impress teacher, she tried explain and made it to easy and to understand. 

I will try to do my best.

Problem and Solution -14-


Today is Friday, I don't have this course but today I have it in this afternoon.
First, teacher answer exercise us about exemplification from last week and she assigned us to practice pronunciation sounds. 

When we answer exercise finished this unit, she gave last unit for this course in the subject "Problem and Solution".  First, she explained us about what is a problem and solution? 

Problem and Solution is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution).

 After that, she assigned us to do exercise, circle the problem markers and highlight the solution markers. Next, she assigned us to do exercise about "Machine gun" and 
found the problem and solution markers. The last, she assigned us to find vocabulary about ingredient of machine gun.


 For me, I very confuses between Problem and Solution unit and cause and effect unit. I think it very  difficult unit.

Exemplification -13-



  In the afternoon, I had this class continue from morning. I started unit 9 Exemplification. First, teacher told to us about Exemplification writing used specific,vivid example for the purpose of adding information to explain.


Transition words and phrases such as

Then, she assigned us to read the text Species of Whales and did exercise.


  Next, she assigned us to do exercise in text 1 College Students' Pressures and found the main idea, markers, and took the words put in the diagram.


 Then, she assigned us to read text 2 "Fun things to do in Great Falls" and did exercise, match the place with the activities. I like this exercise because it's easy for me.



Then, we read the text 3 and did the exercise  about hazards in the home that jeopardize a child. After that, she assigned us to read the text 4 and answer the question for homework . 


 I think exemplification is very interesting, but I don't know many vocabulary. I tried to read and find the meaning of words  it help me to understand.


Definition and Classification -12-

 Today I had A Discourse Approach in Reading in the morning and in the afternoon, unit 7 Definition and unit 8 Classification. 



First, teacher asked to us about  "What is a definition?" someone tried to answer but it's not correct. Then, she explained us and used some example for easy to understand. She taught about vocabulary of definition and classification marker such as  to refer to,to define,to distinguish,category, and type. Next, she assigned us to do exercise, circle the definition markers, highlight the technical terms and underline the definitions. In the exercise I hadn't confident and many mistake.




I have to practice more than I think it will be better. it will help to scan reading and easy for me.

Cause and Effect -11-

In this afternoon, I had A Discourse Approach in Reading. I learned unit 6 it's about Cause and Effect




Teacher told to us about detail of this lesson and  vocabulary of Cause and Effect Markers such as cause,influence,result, to affect, to bring about ,and to result in. After that, she read the text example and explains it.




Then, she assigned us to practice skill in our handout and she assigned us to do exercise, read the sentence and complete the cause and effect diagrams. It's about Titanic.




I like this exercise because I've watched this movie and it made me understand more than. 

Comparison and Contrast -10-

Today, I had A Discourse Approach in Reading.  First, teacher taught us about comparison and contrast from last week. but we had not finish exercise. Today we did exercise about Men and Women : Do they speak the Same Language? About differences between the languages of men and women.



Next, she read the text and searched meaning of the words. After that, she assigned us to practice pronounce sounds.


Then, we did exercise in the text, choose the correct answer and mark T/F each sentence according to paragraph. I learned this lesson about differences between the languages of men and women and I got many vocabulary of the text.

Mid Term test and Comparison -9-


Today I’m very exciting because I had to test for midterm about unit 1-4. I felt worry about this test because the last test, I had less points.



Then, the teacher taught to us about compare and contrast and she assigned us to do exercise in text 2 about Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Katrina. After that, she assigned us to find topic and main idea of this text.

Next, she told to us about words of the text, similarities and differences between them. I think this lesson's difficult for me because I don't know meaning of words. That is my weakness.



The last, she told to us about learning in the class not enough should to learn more by yourself.

Comparison and Contrast


 Today I had A Discourse Approach in Reading class in the afternoon because teacher have a meeting in the morning.



Today we had a  test before midterm. I think this test very hard for me because some word is very hard and I didn't know its meaning. 


Then, she start new unit by show some apple, green apple and orange and she asked the question about similarities and different of apple, green apple and orange.


Next, she read the text and observe its organization to us. She told about comparing thing and word. 
  The last, she assigned us to do homework about comparison and contrast in our handout. I think this unit is hard for me because many vocabulary is very hard and I didn't know its meaning.

Procedure -7-

 Today, I had A Discourse approach in reading class in the afternoon. Procedure or instruction. (How something is done) First, teacher answered the questions that she assigned last week. Then she opened the video about how to make omelette from website ordered to find the word in the video. I can hear the word such as butter,eggs,pan,cheese. Next, she assigned us to do match each sentence with the correct picture and put all sentences in the correct order. 


 Next, she opened the video about recipe for banana smoothie, how to make chicken soup and read the recipe and ordered us to answer the question.



I like this unit because it's funny and I like to watch the video about how to make food from website.

Descriptive -6-


Today, the teacher brought into lessons by opening a Komodo Dragon.Then the teacher assigned us to look at the two mind map about shapes of animals 
such as an ant. 


Then teacher assigned us to make group for discuss about Komodo Dragon and present it in front of class and to find the words and answer the questions. Next , the teacher showed us the pictures of the Budapest and Prague and answer the questions



Finally,  My group present  Role-play about  "The secret by Tim Winton".  I'm very excited and very pleased to have friends and teachers are watching. My group is intended to work Role-play very much for smile of a teacher and my friends.

Narratives -5-




Today is Monday. I had a discourse approach in reading class in the morning. The teacher assigned us to make group for summarize secret in part two and present. 


I like working as a team because we can share the ideas of each one. When taken together, I think it is a good idea. The problem for me I think it is a matter of vocabulary, I often translated incorrectly, I solved the problem by finding the meaning before start the class.


Finally, learning  about  narrative  made  me  fun  if  I  understood very much. I can imagine story and I like team work so much because everyone worked intently.

Recount about merit and fun trip!!!


On Tuesday afternoon the past my friend and I go to the Rai-Khing temple for merit at Nakhon Pathom province Samphan district. We departed at 13 pm. by bus. On the way, we had fun and brought snacks to eat on the bus all the way.



When we reached the temple, we had a pay respect to the Buddha and I felt very happy. After that we went to feed the fish in the river, there was bread as food.


 


I was very surprised when I found that here is have a fancy carp fish very much. My friends and I Feeding fish by entering the food contained in a small bottle. I'm very glad to have done. This is an exciting experience and a memorable it has merit and fun as well.


   

This is the best trip with an unforgettable friendship and have merit. And I thought I would go there again.

The Secret -4-


In the morning, bright Monday. In the day's lesson, I reminded of the story of childhood.Because the teachers gave a sense of thinking as a child such as sad or happy on the board.


After that, she told the story of her childhood to us  for begin this unit  narrative.She let us read and analyze the subject of Secrets by Tim winton by read the first paragraph and then try to Imagination that the story continues. And she let us share ideas, listen to friends.


Finally, she assigned us to make group of four people for  summarize and present to the class.From the lessons on the subject of Secrets by Tim winton, I think when young we had a secret to everyone. Even myself and the secret to younger, never disappeared from my mind.
